Is there a connection between facial hair and epic, virtuous masculinity?
Beards were all the rage for the U.S. Civil War veterans who were among the first members of the Knights of Columbus.
James T. Mullen, (Large Image) the first supreme knight (the organization’s highest-ranking officer), had an impressive mustache.
Some of his accomplishments include:
- Fighting in the Civil War.
- Serving as a policeman and then becoming a business owner, which put him among the most prominent Irish-Americans in late 19th century New Haven, Conn.
- Designing the emblem of the Knights of Columbus.
